On 31 August 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/80/301 without a vote, proclaiming 19 December as the International Day of Recognition for Women Searchers for Missing Persons.
The resolution recognises the vital work of women who search for missing relatives and other missing persons, and calls on States and the United Nations system to take measures to prevent and eliminate discrimination and violence against women searchers, to guarantee their human rights, and to ensure their participation in decisions that affect them.

This recognition is particularly significant for Colombia, where women searchers have for decades played a vital role in defending victims’ rights, seeking the truth, building collective memory and ensuring non-repetition. Colombia also joined as a co-sponsor of the resolution during the General Assembly session.
