Brussels 07/05/2025 – Oidhaco condemns the assassination of Walberto Quintero Medina, trade union leader of Sinaltrainal and vice-president of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores de Colombia CUT.
We would like to echo the communiqués made by Solsoc and Soldepaz Pachakuti, member organisations of the Oidhaco network, as well as the Nodo Caribe de la Plataforma Coordinación Colombia Europa Estados Unidos.
The CUT communiqué states that “yesterday evening, 28th April, (…) Walberto was having a chat with some friends in a shop in the Sicarare neighbourhood in the city of Valledupar and without a word, a hitman shot him 6 times in the back”.
We are grateful for the reaction of the Belgian embassy in Colombia through its social networks.
This murder adds to 59 other murders of social leaders in Colombia since the beginning of the year according to Indepaz. Faced with this situation we do not understand how the European Commission can be proposing to include Colombia in a list of safe countries of origin. As Frontline Defenders states in its latest report ‘in 2024, the HRD Memorial documents the murder of 324 human rights defenders in 32 countries’. Of these 324 people, 157 were killed in Colombia.
