Colombia securing peace: Women’s achievements and the challenges ahead


Join the debate during an international conference with Colombian women human rights defenders, international policy-makers and academics on Wednesday, 22 November 2017.

Colombian women representing different sectors of society will lead discussions with a range of policy-makers and experts from the UK, the EU, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Colombia. There will be simultaneous interpretation between English and Spanish during the entire event.

Questions will include:

  • What was achieved in terms of gender-focused and ethnic commitments in the Colombian Peace Accord?
  • What are the structural challenges for implementation?
  • How has scrutiny from the international community helped or hindered ensuring a gendered perspective on justice for women?
  • Why is a human rights framework essential for building sustainable peace?
  • How can the lessons learned in achieving a gender focus benefit other peace processes?

Keynote speaker: Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, UK Minister of State responsible for the prevention of conflict-related sexual violence

  • Victoria Sandino (FARC Negotiator, joining via Skype)
  • Helga Flamtermesky (Coordinator, Truth, Memory and Reconciliation Commission of Colombian Women in Diaspora)
  • Annika Otterstedt (Head of Development Cooperation, Swedish Embassy Colombia)
  • Hilde Salvesen (Facilitator of the Negotiations at the Norwegian MFA (gender))
  • Fiona Hodgson (Co-Chair of the APPG on Women Peace and Security, UK Parliament)
  • Eamon Gilmore (EU Special Envoy to the Colombian Peace Process)
  • Diego Garcia Sayan (UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers)
