> Carta abierta de organizaciones europeas y colombianas a Martin Schulz tras su visita a Colombia

European and Colombian organisations deliver an open letter to EP President Martin Schulz, following his visit to Colombia

The President of the European Parliament keeps silent about the serious human rights situation in Colombia.

More than 500 European and Colombian organisations – most of them gathered in networks - express their surprise at the silence of Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament (EP), on the situation of Human Rights in Colombia, during his recent visit to the country. For these organisations, the fact that the main representative of this EU institution, elected by EU citizens, went to Colombia and did not speak publicly about this grave situation, is regrettable. They remind him that in ratifying the FTA with Colombia, the European Parliament agreed to monitor in particular “respect for human rights and the environment”. Therefore “as social organisations, as European and Colombian citizens, we consider that you, as President of the EP – a body that aspires to be a ‘strong supporter of Human Rights’, elected by European citizens, must not keep silent about the chilling human rights situation in Colombia”.

In the open letter to Schulz, the organisations welcome his “support for the peace process and call for the release of hostages held by the guerrilla”. They then go on to mention some of the recent attacks on human rights defenders, indigenous peoples, trade union members, victims’ representatives, and others. Included in the list are the horrific murders of indigenous leader Ommer Guejía Taquinás; Alba Chilito-Mery, a grandmother who was the victim of crimes committed by the army and the paramilitaries; and trade unionists Elisabeth Gutiérrez and Juan Carlos Pérez Muñoz. And these are just some of the incidents which occurred between January and February 2013.
